The Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Issues in Counseling of Alabama presents its Fourth Annual Winter Workshop.  It is scheduled for Friday, March 5 in Birmingham at the Historic Cahaba Pumping Station Museum.

 

The Cahaba Pumping Station is a marvelous venue for a professional conference. It is located on 4012 Sicard Hollow Road in Birmingham. Driving directions are included below.

 

Counselors from all specialties and settings are encouraged to participate in this exciting and informative workshop!  You are invited to take advantage of this wonderful professional development opportunity!  Meet with counseling colleagues from around the state!

 

We are pleased to feature Beth Cook as our keynoter.

 

The theme for this year’s Winter Workshop is “LGBT Issues and Spirituality.”  Come and hear our fantastic guest speakers and panelists. This is an excellent training opportunity for counselors seeking helpful information and resources for students and clients with issues related to sexual identity and spirituality.

Treatment Options for Troubled Teens

Collaboration between the Juvenile Justice System and Mental Health Agencies can provide appropriate and effective services for juveniles.  This session will discuss local treatment options varying from a multi-service family approach to out of the home placement.

 

10:30 - 11:45

Applying Magic into Counseling Sessions

Marlin Johns, M.A. Ed., NBCT

 

This session will demonstrate how to productively apply magic into individual, small group, or even large group counseling sessions.  This session will use magic as a counseling tool to build rapport, teach life skills, social skills, therapeutic use, and fun attention grabbers.  Participants will be given resources for buying and making various tricks.

Power and Control: Tactics of Batterers

Participants will learn about the intricate dynamics of domestic violence and the motivation of perpetrators of domestic abuse.  This session will discuss interventions used within the Safeplace PEACE program.

Multidisciplinary Management, Supervision and Outpatient Treatment of Juvenile Sex Offenders

Del McElroy, M.A., LPC-S, JSOCC, Gail Swafford, M.S.W., LCSW-PIP, JSOCC, & Blakely Hopper, B.S.

 

The objective of this presentation is for participants to learn the elements of an intensive community based program; the use of risk assessments; and the use of a multi-disciplinary team model in combining clinical treatment, legal monitoring, and active supervision of adjudicated juvenile sexual offenders.

Speakers

 

Susan Nix, M.A., ALC, is an Outpatient Therapist and Juvenile Court Liaison for Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin Counties through Riverbend Center for Mental Health. 

 

Marlin Johns, M.A. Ed., NBCT, has been actively involved with children and adolescents for 25 years as a coach, educator, youth minister, and counselor. He currently is the counselor at Weeden Elementary School in Florence, Alabama. 

 

Gail Fowler, M.S., is a Victims Services Manager and has worked at Safeplace for the past 7 years.  Currently, she is over the Court Advocacy Program for Safeplace, supervisor of the

PEACE Program, which is Safeplace’s State Certified Batterers Prevention Program. 

 

Del McElroy, M.A., LPC-S, JSOCC, Gail Swafford, M.S.W., LCSW-PIP, JSOCC, & Blakely Hopper, B.S. are employed at Brooks’ Place—The Children’s Advocacy Center of Cullman, Al.  Del is the clinical coordinator for Brooks’ Place, and Gail is the fulltime counselor.  Blakely serves as the juvenile liaison, case manager, and coordinator of the multi-disciplinary policy and direct service teams.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham's Counselor Education Program's Zeta Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota is pleased to announce the second annual wine tasting to benefit the endowment effort for the Glenda Elliott Scholarship. The award is presented by Zeta Chapter to a UAB Counselor Education student each spring. This year's event will be at The Village Wine Market in English Village on Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

Tickets may be purchased in advance for $30.00 or at the door for $50.00.  All proceeds will go into the endowment fund.
